About Us
Our History
Maxey’s Steakhouse has been part of the Wheeler community since 1984, when Maxey and Wanda Herd returned to their hometown and built the restaurant from the ground up. With hard work, care, and a deep connection to the people of this town, they created a place known for good food, friendly service, and the kind of welcome that made folks feel right at home.
Over the years, Maxey’s became more than a restaurant — it became a gathering place for families, friends, neighbors, and travelers passing through the Texas Panhandle. Meals were shared, milestones were celebrated, and memories were made around these tables.
Today, that legacy continues as Maxey’s enters a new chapter under the ownership of Chris Hazel, owner of Cellar 55 in Amarillo, Texas. With deep respect for what Maxey and Wanda built, the goal is simple: honor the tradition that made Maxey’s special while carrying it forward with the same warmth, hospitality, and care this community has always known.
Our Promise
What matters to us is simple: serve our community well, honor the Maxey Steakhouse legacy, and make every guest feel right at home.
- A Warm Welcome – From the moment you walk through our doors, you’ll be treated like family. We believe good food is only part of the experience — friendly service and genuine hospitality matter just as much.
- Quality You Can Count On – We’re committed to serving meals made with care, consistency, and pride. Whether you’re here for steaks, seafood, or the salad bar, we want every visit to be one you can rely on.
- A Place for Community – Maxey’s has long been a gathering place for Wheeler, and that spirit still matters to us today. We’re proud to be a place where neighbors meet, families celebrate, and memories are made around the table.
- Respect for Tradition – We believe in honoring the legacy that made Maxey’s special while carrying it forward with care. Our promise is to protect what people have always loved about this place: hearty meals, kind service, and a true sense of home.
We’re grateful for every guest who walks through our doors, and we’ll keep working to make every visit one worth coming back for.
